Qatar end of service
Qatar gratuity calculator
Estimate your end-of-service gratuity from your last basic salary and your years of service. The formula is Article 54 of Law No. 14 of 2004.
Article 54 uses the last basic wage, not housing, transport, or other allowances.
Estimated gratuity
QAR 35,000
5 years of service on a basic salary of QAR 10,000.
How the calculation works
Article 54 gives the worker three weeks of wage for every year of employment, agreed between the parties but never less than that. The last basic wage is the base. A three-week wage is 21 days, and the daily rate is the monthly basic salary divided by 30, so each year adds 21 divided by 30 of a month's basic salary.
The article requires one completed year of service, and fractions of a year are paid in proportion. The law sets no cap and no reduction for resignation. The exception is Article 61: an employer may dismiss without notice and without gratuity for the serious cases listed there. Many employers also agree a better package in the contract, and the law lets them.
Worked example
QAR 10,000 basic salary, 5 years of service.
Daily basic wage: 10,000 ÷ 30 = QAR 333.33.
Three weeks per year: 333.33 × 21 = QAR 7,000.
Total: 7,000 × 5 = QAR 35,000.
Questions
Is gratuity based on basic salary or total salary?
Article 54 says the last basic wage is the base for the calculation. Housing, transport, and other allowances are not part of it unless the contract says otherwise.
Does resigning affect my gratuity?
The law does not reduce gratuity on resignation. Article 54 applies when the service ends and gives a minimum of three weeks per year. The exception is Article 61, where the employer may dismiss without notice and without gratuity for the listed cases, such as false documents, serious misconduct, or assault.
Do I get gratuity if I worked less than one year?
No. Article 54 requires one completed year of service. After that, fractions of a year count in proportion to the time worked.
Is there a cap on Qatar gratuity?
No. The law sets a floor, not a ceiling. Many contracts agree a larger package, and that agreed amount applies.
Can the employer deduct from my gratuity?
Article 54 allows the employer to deduct any debt the worker owes. Under Article 71 the deduction for damage the worker caused cannot exceed the wage due, and it needs an enquiry first.
What if I return to the same employer within two months?
Article 54 treats the service as continuous if the employment ended for a reason other than the Article 61 cases and the worker returns within two months. The earlier period then counts toward the gratuity.
Does this apply in Qatar Financial Centre or Qatar Free Zones?
No. The QFC and the free zones have their own employment rules. This calculator covers the Qatar mainland private sector under Law No. 14 of 2004.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is an estimate for planning. For a dispute or a final settlement, use the Ministry of Labour, the labour courts, or a lawyer.
